Healthy chives?

Chives are the Dutch Herb of the Year. That is the reason why we will tell you more about chives this year. This time we will explore the medicinal qualities of this herb.

Chives have been used for centuries. Besides its rich aroma, it was also cultivated because of its assumed medicinal properties. For instance, Charlemagne stimulated the cultivation of chives because it could help against stomach complaints, constipation, melancholy and deafness. It was also thought that chives could help against a hangover.

However, it must be admitted that the medicinal qualities of chives are not really that big. On the other hand, there are some healthful qualities which have to be mentioned. Chives stimulate the digestive system and breaks down fat. Because of this, it has a positive effect on cholesterol. It also lowers blood pressure and prevents coughing. Another healthy quality is that it dispels parasites and worms from the bowels. Because it is so lightly digestible, it can also be used for babies and children.

Chives contain a lot of vitamin A and C and natural minerals like sodium, calcium, potassium, phosphors, magnesium and iron. Therefore, the herb gives a lot of energy. Because of that, too much chives can lead to sleeplessness and restlessness.

And finally, a facial mask with chives does wonders for your skin. For a facial mask, let two tablespoons of chives soak in 1 litter of boiling water for ten minutes. Add two tablespoons of yoghurt and apply on the face. After ten minutes, rinse of your face with concentrated chives water (Soak one tablespoon of chives for two our in two tablespoons of boiling water).
